PEBKAC

From Wiki:

PEBKAC is an acronym which stands for “Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair”. The phrase is used by computer experts as a semi-humorous way to describe to one another that the problem was not in the computer but was instead caused by the user operating it.

Wish I had known this one during my tech support days.

Finally Google Docs is complete and now includes Presentations, and covers all the major apps of MS Office.

I tested it out with a PPT file and it uploaded great, and allows for centralized sharing and collaborating.

Spindle Launch

SpindleSpindle: NYC in the first person launched today. This is the offspring of a good friend whom I used to work with in my “publishing” days. The site has a lot of promise and should be a great experience for all those involved, including yours truly. Some great contributors are involved and the Publisher can tell a good story.

A little something taken from the site:

Spindle is an online literary magazine with a twist, featuring creative non-fiction, poetry and short fiction by, for and about New Yorkers — literal and spiritual. Showcasing emerging writers, artists, musicians and other creative types, we are dedicated to the fundamental idea that cultural diversity, not cash or pseudo-celebrity, rules everything around us.

Why does it exist?

Because the New Yorker can be rather boring sometimes?

Because the Village Voice ain’t what it used to be?

Because TimeOut and CitySearch are kind of lame?

Because there’s far too many creative people in this City and not nearly enough interesting venues to feature their work?

Or, more simply, why the hell not?

Reader Search
Looks like Google Reader has finally added search, a long overdue feature. Always surprised me that a Google product didn’t have search. Now if I only knew when it will show for me…

Thanks to Matt.

[Update] 5 minutes after my post it is now included.

The Sketches

Went to see The Sketches last night at Arlene’s Grocery, which made me realize how much I miss going to see bands in small venues. Manny, Charles (brothers), Greg and David put on a good show and I like their sound.

So half of the entertainment value came from the follow-on act, The Cringe. Their claim to fame seems to be solely that the lead singer is married to Rachel Ray. The music was fairly unoriginal but it was the scene that I got a kick out of. All sorts of Ray followers filling the place, with Rachel dancing away right next to me. The ‘highlight’ of the evening was when Ray’s husband smashed his guitar… a completely odd and waste of a good instrument. Rachel’s groupies were attractive though, and the quote by a friend sums it up: “More plastic in them than an ATM”… science at it finest.

Maelstrom
So I was checking out iToner from Ambrosia Software that lets you drag and drop ringtones without hacking your iPhone, and this looks very interesting. And what else that got my interest was Maelstrom is now open-source and has been ported to pretty much all platforms. This was pretty much the first game I played, and spent many an hour in the computer labs playing this game (while working!). There other game, Apeiron has also been ported to OSX. Pretty much those two and Bolo (since ported to Windows as Winbolo) consumed most of the hours that could of been studying.
