PATH Alternatives

PATHI wanted to follow up on an article in the NYTimes about the PATH being fragile to bombing, since it also came up during the family holiday gathering.

There really are not that many options to get to the city from Hoboken, and noting compares to the PATH for cost, at $1.50. (Which I compared awhile ago)

  • NJ Transit Bus - $2.30 To Port Authority on the 126. This is actually a pretty good ride and especially quick from Uptown Hoboken.
  • NY Waterway Ferry - $4.00 from Downtown to Pier A Downtown ($7 from Hoboken Uptown)
  • NJ Transit Train - $5 to Penn Station through Secaucus. (Technically train crew seem to only check tickets after Secaucus, so you could save $2)
  • Drive via Holland Tunnel - $6 toll plus gas and traffic.

So not really great options, especially when I work fairly close to WTC. I’m not concerned about the tunnels though, the odds are still higher for a car accident.

Designing eNewsletters

A co-worker did a great job documenting our typical design process, including eNewsletters. This is very funny and important to keep your sense of humor or else corporate life would get us down.

NJ Transit Google Maps

NJ Transit
I have yet to see a really good mash-up for NJ Transit on Google Maps like the one for the NYC Metro. The closest is a good site focused on the various routes, TrainsNJ with driving directions to get to stations. I would rather see all the routes on one maps, to get a better idea of the closest station from any location.

Vistered Little Theme 1.6

Since the author of Vistered Little (the WordPress theme I use on the site currently) has retired, I have upgraded to version 1.6 now maintained by Howard.

Lots of great fixes including faster background first loading and a flexible width! Was wanting this feature. Nic developed a great Theme and Howard and added to it well.

Google Landing Pages

Landing PagesFor those small and medium sized businesses that don’t have a website, Google is now giving them a free host a webpage that can be created when joining AdSense. All wizard based so people don’t need to know HTML.

So yet again Google is expanding the pool of people that can advertise with them.

Heard about this from MarketingVOX.

Swivel

SwivelTechCrunch just mentioned (twice over two days) the launch of Swivel, that aims to be ‘the internet archive for data’. And to keep the hype index high the owners also used the description “YouTube for Data.” With the easy interface and deep data, I see it as Google Trends for the real world.

I especially like the Wine vs Violent Crime comparison… especially relevant after spending some time in vineyards.

Tuscan Wine Tours

Black RosterOur last day in Florence was spent going on a wine, olive oil and vinegar tour in the Chianti Classico region with Tuscan Wine Tours. Four of us in the group finished off a good 4-5 bottles of wine, tasted some great olive oil (my favorite was cold pressed in the traditional way), vinegar (Chianti version of Modena’s Balsamic), some different honey’s, and got to see many different towns along the ‘la Chiantigiana’.

Rebecca was a great guide and I highly recommend a tour if you are in Tuscany!
